As the flagship tunneling contract under the Gateway Development Commission (GDC)’s Hudson Tunnel Project, the Palisades Tunnel Project entails boring two parallel, 5,100-ft hard-rock tunnels through the Palisades on the New Jersey side of the Hudson River—together with six cross-passages and a 120-ft-deep launch shaft.
Under this high-risk, technically complex contract, Wang Technology is the instrumentation and monitoring specialist to oversee structural and geotechnical safety throughout heavy TBM excavation and shaft construction.
Wang’s monitoring program encompassed real-time instrumentation across all critical tunneling and shaft operations, including deployment of vibration sensors (PPV monitoring), tiltmeters, crack-width gauges, automated total stations, and deformation sensors installed at key locations along tunnel headings, portal areas, the Hoboken launch shaft, and adjacent rock faces.
Data were continuously collected and transmitted through a centralized web platform that triggered automated alerts upon threshold exceedance—per contract requirements.
This enabled proactive response during TBM advance, cross-passage drill-and-blast events, shaft sinking, and support installation, safeguarding both tunnel integrity and existing infrastructure in alignment with GDC’s rigorous construction monitoring specifications.
