Portal North Bridge

As part of Amtrak and NJ TRANSIT’s massive $2.4 billion Portal North Bridge replacement project—intended to eliminate the century-old swing span and improve reliability on the NEC—Wang Technology delivered a comprehensive structural and geotechnical monitoring program for heavy construction activities such as installation of pipe piles, shafts, cofferdams, minipiles, sheeting, excavation, and filling operations.

The new fixed-span arch bridge, rising approximately 50 ft above the Hackensack River and spanning nearly 2.5 miles, requires precise monitoring to safeguard rail and marine traffic as well as nearby infrastructure.

Wang installed and managed a full suite of real-time instrumentation—including vibration sensors (seismographs/PPV monitoring), automated total stations, tiltmeters, crack-width gauges, and deformation sensors—positioned at critical locations near pile-driving zones, cofferdams and embankment fills.

Data acquisition was web-enabled, allowing immediate alerting against contract-specified thresholds, triggering notification protocols and construction adjustments as needed.

This proactive monitoring network supported safe execution of complex heavy civil operations, ensuring structural stability, compliance with FRA/NJDOT limits, and the uninterrupted performance of this key Gateway Program element.
